- Looking back on my one month in Edmonton, what I remember most is not a special event, but the small moments of everyday life. When getting off the bus, people would say “Thank you” to the driver. This simple habit felt new to me and showed the warmth of the people.
From late February, I joined the English for Science and Technology (EST) program at the University of Alberta. My days consisted of morning classes and afternoon activities while living with a host family. I am deeply grateful to my host family for their kindness, as they welcomed me warmly.
Winter in Edmonton was not as harsh as I had expected. Buildings were well heated, and the snow was carefully cleared. I was also surprised to see wild rabbits and squirrels around the city, and even bison on my trip, which made me feel closer to nature.
In class, we developed practical English skills through science-related topics. One memorable activity was a presentation on a Nobel Prize topic, where we had to explain complex ideas clearly in our own words. We also created a new invention in pairs and presented it to attract investment. Through these experiences, I learned both the difficulty and the enjoyment of communicating persuasively in English.
What impressed me most was the kindness of the local people. When I asked students if I could join them for lunch, they greeted me with a smile, saying, “Welcome to Canada!” At the weekly Conversation Club, people listened carefully to my imperfect English. I realized that communication is not about perfect grammar, but about a willingness to connect.
I also traveled to Banff with a friend. Although planning the trip was not always easy, the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains made it unforgettable. Sharing this experience strengthened our bond, and I will cherish this friendship for life.
This experience broadened my perspective. I saw people from diverse backgrounds living together naturally, which made me rethink my own values. Although my stay was short, it changed my attitude toward interacting with others. I will carry what I learned forward into my future.
